Weltanschauung: As they emerge from ignorance, the protagonists improve
in ways increasingly inscrutible -- and unimaginable -- to their contemporaries.
This site presents a playful, speculative reconstruction of Neolithic Europe
in interesting times.
In the period of our focus, the Kurgan diaspora was on-going, disrupting
the lives of the already downtrodden aborigines. To the Kurgans, these
natives were Barbarians, speaking nonsense and barely subsisting owing to a
number of factors. The Kurgans, in their own minds, worked with and
raised up those Barbarians they could help. The remainder, the bulk of the
Barbarians, were suspicious and resentful of migrants whom they considered
to be unwelcome guests: invaders. Still, with their organizational
superiority, the nomadic tribes, despite being few, dominated the lands
and the autochthonous clans -- physically, culturally and linguistically.
These tribes from the Pontic-Caspian steppe north of the Black Sea brought
with them the Kurgan language. With ethnic mixing, this had become the
primary tongue of what we will charitably call diplomacy. Clanspeople with
their egalitarian, peaceful structure were ill-prepared to repel raids by
brigands roaming the countryside. Tribesmen, hierarchical and warlike, were
more than a match for these thugs. Clans needed to communicate with the tribes
in Kurgan to make their concerns clear and implore for assistance.
Here, we can be certain of evolution in speech patterns -- and escalation of
The mishpochas did not take lightly to the encroachment of the tribes, yet they
could do little in their plight. These large, very extended families had
complemented their hunting and gathering with horticulture, and had initially
done well with their gardening and small farms. But their techniques were less
sophisticated than those of the south and had led to soil depletion. Combined
with this, climate change had made their reliance on agriculture untenable. In
their weakened state, clans made easy targets for depredation. Tribesmen, while
generally greeted with animosity, were the only effective bulwark against pillage.
In this milieu of physical insecurity and ethnic antipathy, peoples have one
and only one concern: survival. They have no concept of progress. Even if
they were to have it, they would be, at best, suspicious of it. For it involves
change, and that to them generally means change for the worse. Nonetheless,
progress will occur and will have astonishing, long lasting repercussions --
that we unknowingly experience today. What these are and how they occurred
-- and why they occurred -- have ineluctable reasons presented, in due time,
here (click to proceed).
